How to create a prepopulated 5-Star Google Review Link for Customers

Update: this method no longer works. We are currently researching new ways to create a prepopulated 5-star Google review link.

With 91% of consumers reading online reviews before connecting with a business, online reputation management has become a necessity for your business. A single negative Google review can have a detrimental impact on your reputation, and therefore your revenue. So, taking control of your online reviews and especially Google reviews, is essential and doable through Google My Business.

This year, Google has made some changes to make it a much easier process to obtain a pre-filled Google review link. With Google My Business, you can use a direct link to the review form to simplify the process. You'll always want to make it is as easy as possible for someone to leave a review, without any navigational work needed from them.

After clicking the link you create, customers are sent to your Google My Business review form where they can describe their experience. Working with this direct link removes the likelihood of your customer dropping out of the process, due to frustration or impatience.

The Benefits

The reason we recommend Google My Business reviews is because of Google's dominance online. More than 80% of all online searches are performed on Google. When people search for your business, the Google reviews are one of the first things they'll see. So you want to take control of these reviews by encouraging your customers to leave positive feedback.

Also, when your company is listed on Google My Business, you're likely to increase ranking in the general search results. This is because the listing in Google My Business adds some "Google juice" to your business' placement in search results.

The importance of Google My Business Reviews?

Online reviews are nowadays essential for a business' online presence since 84% of people value online reviews as much as a personal recommendation.

Research has shown that a business should strive for at least five reviews on Google My Business. As soon as your business has five reviews, you'll likely start to see traffic from organic search results due to your presence in the search engine's local listings.

To leave a review, your customer needs a Google account to be connected to the online review. This wat Google can be reasonably sure the reviews are legitimate and from an actual person, instead of a made up review from the company itself or a malicious competitor.

Setting up a direct, pre-filled 5-star review link

The Google My Business link will work on any device. But to set up this pre-filled 5-star link, you'll need a mobile phone. It takes some time, but in most cases, it's well worth it.

1. Verify your address after setting up a Google My Business company page. Don't know how? Google explains it here.

2. Find your company's listing in Google. Or locate your Place ID here.

3. Go to the 'Review and Rate' section. Click the 5th star on the right of your window. This rating will be used in the direct link you will send to your customers.

We made a short video tutorial for you:

4. Go to the 'Leave a Review' page and select the address in the URL bar to copy and paste in an email.

5. Voila! Your direct link should be ready. But try it out first by sending the email to yourself.

6. Optional: You can make the long, ugly, link shorter with Google's URL shortener. This shortened link will be more recognizable for your customers. Set up a page on your website with a relevant and easy name, such as 'Reviews,' so your review page has an easily recognizable URL like https://www.businesswebsite.com/reviews. This URL could include a "Leave a Review" button, which you'd redirect the customer to the original long URL.

How to ask your customers for reviews

Most of your customers are probably very busy, so to make it very easy to leave a review. This SEO company summed up a few important things to keep in mind.

  • Good timing:
Don't ask your customer for a review too early; they might not have enough experience to form an opinion about you. But don't wait so long that the great first impression fades. This timing is different for every business and industry; so it might be worth experimenting to get the best timing.
  • Make it as easy as possible:
By using the Google My Bussiness reviews link you created with the instructions above, you significantly reduce the customers' effort. They don't have to look for the form or navigate their way to a location because you provided the link, which makes them able to find the review form with a single click.
  • Use Email Marketing:
If you have an email marketing campaign, make sure to use it when asking customers for reviews. This way you reach your customers in mass instead of one by one. Or integrate the link in a Call To Action (button) in your email signature that links to your Google My Business review page.

Rather than hoping your customers will leave a kind word about you, take control by requesting reviews with a simplified process. If you're battling negative online reviews, this strategy is even more important.
